Exposing Shutter Myths
We spend a lot of time speaking with residents about shutters in Atlanta.
And even if it may be surprising, when we speak to homeowners around The ATL, we hear the same few myths about shutters floating around. Let’s spend a few minutes to set the facts straight and expose some oft-repeated plantation shutter myths so you can make the right choice for your home when shopping for new window treatments.
Myth: Shutters Are Easy to Install Yourself
Several home projects can easily be done on your own in just one day. Installing shutters might not be one of them, however.
Installing new shutters can be difficult from the beginning, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows have to be extremely precise to ensure an easy and tight fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, hoisting large shutter panels and installing them level might be a rough job. If a single part of the process is done incorrectly, you might end up with crooked shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.
Myth: Shutters Will Make Homes Look Dark
Less-informed home designers might not prefer shutters, claiming they’ll make houses look dark or dimly lit. This myth likely stems from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.
Think of it this way: sunlight will always enter through your windows at an angle. An interior shutter will allow you to modify that angle by tilting their louvers, offering you better control over how much light comes inside. And bear in mind, shutters can still swing completely open to let in as much light as you might need.
Myth: Shutters Are Expensive
It’s a fact that shutters won’t be as cheap as discount rack blinds from a hardware store. However this myth has to do with how you’re thinking about shutters. If you think about shutters simply as a basic decoration that you don’t expect to last more than a year or two, then yes, shutters are a little expensive. But shutters are a permanent part of your house, and offer several benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can increase your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last decades, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced over and over again.
Myth: Shutters Only Look Good In Old Homes
Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it definitely isn’t accurate. While shutters were seen often in older home styles stretching back decades, their crisp, clean lines and neutral colors makes it so they fit in just as easily with more fashionable, up-to-date designs. Plantation shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
